Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, is backing an Early Day Motion (EDM) that calls for a ban on a pesticide that is decimating our bee population.
EDM 312 (Pesticide Use and Bumble Bees) highlights the plight facing bumble bees when exposed to imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid pesticide. A number of countries in Europe, including France, have restricted or suspended altogether the use of imidacloprid. Mike has met with beekeepers in Hove in the past and was more than happy to sign EDM 312, which has received cross-party support.
Commenting, Mike said: “Bumbles bees are an incredibly important part of our ecosystem and worryingly they are under threat. Several countries in Europe have taken action to ensure that their bee populations are protected following evidence of colony collapse. Brighton & Hove has a large beekeeping community and I am concerned that not enough is being done to protect Britain’s bees.”
