Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, is backing councils around the country that are fining people for dropping litter.
The leader of Merton Council, Cllr Stephen Alambritis, recently backed the ruling of a court which fined a litterer £400. The prosecution was brought before the court by Merton Council, which has recently cracked down on the selfish, anti-social behaviour. Mike has raised the issue of litter fines with Brighton & Hove City Council on a number of occasions and would like to see fines introduced locally.
Commenting Mike said, “People who wantonly drop litter are both lazy and selfish, as their behaviour impacts on everyone and costs a huge amount to clear up. Councils are spending millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money on anti-litter campaigns that just aren’t working. I doubt many people discuss the latest Keep Tidy poster when out having a drink, but you can guarantee that they’ll mention being landed with a massive fine. I have no doubt dropped litter will be worth its weight in gold and that the fines will act as a deterrent to others.”
