Justice Select Committee Member Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has backed a shake-up in prison rewards, following the Justice Department’s change in the prison regime.
Mike’s colleague the Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP, Secretary of State for Justice, has announced that the Conservative Party is the party of law and order and is spearheading a radical reform in how inmates spend their days. Rewards will very much be linked to rehabilitation, as prisoners see automatic perks removed and replaced by a reward for self-improvement scheme.
Commenting, Mike said: “I am a strong believer in rehabilitation, but it must not be forgotten that prisoners have been locked up as a punishment. The public are angry that prisoners appear to have a cushy lifestyle that includes subscription TV that many hard working people who obey the law cannot even afford. It is only right that limited incentives and privileges have to be earned and are not just dished out upon arrival as a welcome bonus.”
