Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has backed a Parliamentary Motion that calls for children to be able to swim at least 25 meters by the time that they leave primary school.
Early Day Motion (EDM) 160 (School Swimming) draws attention to recent research that reveals that half of children between the ages of seven and eleven cannot swim the length of a typical swimming pool. The motion recognises the importance of children learning to be safe in and around water and for the Department of Education to support swimming in schools as a valuable life skill.
Commenting, Mike said: “Learning to swim is an important part of any child’s development. It is alarming how many children cannot swim, as being confident around water is essential for a child’s overall safety. I hope that the Department of Education will take heed and support this important issue. I have been pushing for a 50m pool locally so hopefully in the future children from Brighton & Hove will be able to swim twice as far as the national standard.”
