Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, is delighted at the news that TAKEPART, a local initiative , is the latest recipient of a Big Society award.
TAKEPART is run by the sports development team at Brighton & Hove City Council in partnership with over 100 sports clubs, charities, community groups, local businesses and public sector organisations. This year’s TAKEPART events saw 1,600 young people participate in intra-school competitions and an estimated Ł16,000 of free coaching and tuition that has been provided voluntarily by local clubs and coaches. TAKEPART has helped more than 100 local sports clubs raise their profile and attract new members.
The Prime Minister, David Cameron MP, has announced that TAKEPART will receive the Big Society reward due to the scheme being commended for enabling many people to take part in a variety of free sporting activities before and, essentially, after the London 2012 Olympics.
Commenting, Mike said: “TAKEPART is a credit to Brighton & Hove, I congratulate them on their achievements. It is important to encourage people of all ages to do sport, in order to be healthier and to create a diverse range of opportunities for themselves in different areas of life.”
