Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has backed an Early Day Motion (EDM) in Parliament that calls on the Government to extend the duty of the Fire Service in flood situations.
EDM 952 (Flooding and the Fire Services) urges the Government to acknowledge the impressive response of the Fire Service to the devastating flooding over the last several months. Furthermore, it calls upon the Government to help improve the Fire Service’s ability to respond to flooding by making it a statutory duty for the firefighters to attend flooding incidents. This would help to minimise injury, damage, and death and would bring England and Wales into line with the existing measures that are in place in Scotland and Northern Ireland. His support follows requests from East Sussex Fire & Rescue for an extension of their powers.
Commenting, Mike said: “Our local firefighters are a credit to the profession. Their work in the recent floods has been exceptional and they have doubtlessly saved many lives through their hard and professional work. We should allow them to get on with their jobs to their fullest potential by involving them in the planning process for these serious situations. Therefore I fully support this motion and I am pleased to see that it has drawn broad, cross-party support”.
