Sustainability at the Heart of Cabinet, Says City Leader

Brighton and Hove City Council Leader, Councillor Mary Mears, has been talking about the importance of sustainability issues to her Administration and the discussions at the recent Cabinet Committee on this issue.

Mary told BrightonandHoveConservatives: 'One of my first acts as Leader was to establish a committee of the Cabinet to keep a track of the Council's environmental initiatives and to take forward matters that needed to be considered at the highest level. This was in evidence at a recent meeting of that Committee.

For example, we discussed taking forward the 10:10 Campaign where the City Council has committed to reduce its carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. We also discussed the Administration's policy of creating more allotments so that more people can grow their own food. The Council presently has a waiting list for allotments and we are working, through the release of new land and dividing up disused allotments, to give more the opportunity to have an allotment.

We had a report back from the City Sustainability Partnership which covered discussions on the 10:10 Campaign, I mentioned earlier, the proposed City Transport Partnership and the Waste and Minerals Core Strategy.'

Mary added: 'It is right that we give a clear focus to the Council's environmental policies and how we work with our city partners. We are stewards for our environment and it is our responsibility to hand it on to our children in an excellent condition.'
