Cllr Geoffrey Theobald OBE
Geoffrey is Leader of the Conservative Group on Brighton & Hove City Council and he represents Patcham Ward. He is Group Spokesman on the Council’s Policy & Resources Committee and is also a member of the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee and the Health & Wellbeing Board. He has been a member of the Greater Brighton Economic Board since it was launched.
He is a member of the Environment, Economy, Housing & Transport Board and the Councillors’ Forum of the Local Government Association.
Until recently he was a longstanding member of the LGA’s Conservative Group Executive and of the Board of the Conservative Councillors’ Association.
Geoffrey was Chairman of the Board of Directors of LACORS (Local Authorities Co-ordinators of Regulatory Services) for 7 years, a member of the Board of the Gangmasters’ Licensing Authority for its first 5 years and of the Board of PASS, the National Proof of Age Standards Scheme for 4 years, retiring from them all in 2009.
He is a past Chairman of the Cultural Services Executive of the Local Government Association and Conservative spokesman on the former Fire Committee and Tourism Panel and has served on the LGA’s Executive and Improvement Board. From 1989 to 1997 Geoffrey was a leading member of the Association of County Councils and Spokesman on the Fire and Emergency Planning Committee
Geoffrey retired as Senior Partner of a leading provincial firm of Chartered Surveyors in 1989 when he was elected Leader of East Sussex County Council and Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee. He had previously served as Chairman of the Highways and Transportation, Public Protection and Social Services Committees.
He was Mayor of Brighton in 1982/3.
Geoffrey is a past member of the Sussex Police Authority, the East Sussex Fire Authority, the Council of the University of Sussex and a former Director of Brighton Festival Society Limited.
He is President of the Federation of Brighton Pavilion and Hove & Portslade Conservative Associations
Geoffrey is a Governor of Patcham High School, Vice-President of the Brighton & Hove Branch of the NSPCC, previously Chairman for 15 years, a Freeman of the City of London, a Member of the M.C.C., a Life Member of Sussex County Cricket Club and Vice-President of Brighton & Hove Cricket Club.
Married to Carol, who was Mayor of Brighton and Hove in 2007/8, they have 2 daughters and 2 sons
He enjoys most sports, the theatre, reading the classics, gardening and foreign travel.
