Conservative Group Leader on Brighton & Hove City Council has urged the Green Administration to follow the lead of Westminster City Council, and scrap their damaging parking charge increases.
Cllr. Theobald’s plea follows the news today that Westminster City Council will not now be going ahead with controversial plans to introduce evening and weekend parking charges in the West End. London Mayor Boris Johnson said that “common sense has prevailed” and has described the decision as “brave and correct”, adding that “it is very important that … businesses should not have any extra burdens.”
Cllr. Theobald said: “Westminster Council has been brave enough to recognise that the interests of local business must come first in these tough economic times and now Brighton & Hove’s Greens should swallow their pride, admit they also got it wrong and fully reverse their own damaging parking charge hikes before it is too late. We had a partial climbdown yesterday but Business and Trader Permits will still rise by over 70% under the Green’s latest plans. And, apart from welcome changes on Madeira Drive, the increases in on-street pay and display and the Council’s off-street car parks are still going ahead. I’m afraid that these were just token concessions designed to buy off the increasingly vociferous campaign by local business in the City.”
