Mike has welcomed the passing of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill by the House of Lords after its third reading.
The bill will now return to the House of Commons so that MPs may discuss any changes that have been made. No new amendments may be made at this stage, and once all the amendments have been agreed upon by both Houses it will receive Royal Assent.
Mike has been campaigning for squatting to be criminalised since his election to Parliament in 2010 and has been supported by his colleague the Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke QC MP, Secretary of State for Justice. Squatting is a large problem in Brighton & Hove, with numerous instances of this organised and frequently menacing behaviour blighting the lives of ordinary people.
Commenting, Mike said: “This bill cannot become law soon enough. I am comforted that soon residents will have the protection that they deserve and will no longer be powerless against anti-social squatters.”
