Mike has welcomed National Childhood Obesity Week as a way of raising awareness of the important health issue of childhood obesity facing our countrys young people.

To show his support, Mike has signed Early Day Motion (EDM) 243 which warns that a failure to tackle the issue of obesity could end up costing the country 50 billion a year by 2050. The EDM calls on the Government to support this campaign using all resources at its disposal in order to avert a financial crisis for the NHS.

National Childhood Obesity Week is sponsored by MEND (which stands for Mind, Exercise, Nutrition Do it!) and encourages families to become fitter, healthier and happier by spending more time together being active. With nearly a third of children being obese, putting them at grave risk of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, it is vital that everyone recognises the severity of the issue and does their bit to tackle it.

Commenting, Mike said: I fully support National Childhood Obesity Week as a way of highlighting the staggering scale of the problem. We all know that obesity is a problem but we all often find excuses to avoid dealing with it this has to stop. Left unchecked, childhood obesity is a financial ticking time-bomb for the NHS and will mean future generations of taxpayers will be left to pick up the pieces of todays problem.
