Government Confirms to Mike that City’s First Free School Will Open in September

Mike has received confirmation from the Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, that the Bilingual Primary School will be able to open in September.

Michael Gove has written to Mike to inform him that the Department for Education has agreed to enter into a funding agreement with the Bilingual Primary School Project Trust. The Bilingual Primary School will be the first fully bilingual state-funded primary school in the UK, teaching the National Curriculum in both English and Spanish. The school will now open in September 2012, initially with Reception age and Year 1 children. For more information on the school, click here.

Commenting, Mike said: “I was delighted when I received the letter from the Secretary of State with this excellent news for both parents and children of the City. Free Schools are a brilliant opportunity for communities up and down the country and from September this will become a reality for a number of children in Brighton & Hove. I look forward to learning some Spanish when I visit the new bilingual school.”

Marina Gutierrez, Chair of the Bilingual Primary School Project Trust, added: “We are delighted that we have now entered into our Funding Agreement with the Secretary of State. I would like to thank everyone for their patience, support and encouragement over the past year, it has been well worth it!”
