Governments Environmental Agenda on Track

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, is supporting the Governments drive to address several key environmental issues, after recent projections highlight a positive future for the solar PV sector.

The Government has announced that the solar PV sector is now in very good health, following reforms earlier this year to the Feed In Tariff (FIT) scheme, which were met with hostility by traders in the renewable industry. The economic model that the FIT scheme was based on relied heavily on unsustainable subsidies, which were addressed as part of the Governments plan to reduce Britains deficit.

Brighton & Hove is a big eco city which has a number of solar PV panel schemes in the pipeline, along with a big residential take-up of the clean and sustainable technology. This is good news for local businesses, who felt that reforms to the FIT scheme would damage future trade. However, Ministers have just announced that they expect that over one million properties will have solar PV panels by 2015, which is up from under 300,000 just a couple of years ago. Reforms to incorporate other technologies such as Micro-CHIP, Micro Hydro and Anaerobic Digestion highlight the Governments commitment to diversifying the environmental agenda.

Commenting, Mike said: The Government has taken a serious approach to address numerous environmental issues that we are facing as a country. I know that many residents of Hove and Portslade are environmentally minded and will welcome these developments. These reforms were initially seen by many as a setback for the industry, but these developments are positive. This is one of those issues where we must not bury our heads in the sand, so I am pleased to be part of a team which is tackling this head-on.
