Free parking petition to be presented to Council by Central Hove Conservatives

On Thursday (25 Oct.) Central Hove candidate, Adam Love, will present a petition for free parking at Norton Road car park to Brighton & Hove City Council. The meeting is due to be held in Hove Town Hall – directly opposite the car park.
The 420 signature petition calls on the council to make parking free at weekends for everyone and at all times for residents with Zone N parking permits.
Adam Love and Central Hove councillor, Andrew Wealls, have pointed out that the car park is empty much of the time, especially at weekends.
Yet, at the same time visitors are put off coming to Hove and spending money in local businesses because of the cost and availability of parking spaces. And for residents, it is often impossible to find a space on the roads near their homes.
Love and Wealls’ proposals have also been backed by local business groups and they have reported overwhelming support from the Hove residents and business people.
Commenting, Adam Love said: “I am presenting this petition to the council to highlight the unhappiness there is amongst local people with parking in our city. I hope the Green Administration changes course and puts residents’ interests first, rather than treating parking as a cash cow. Offering free parking at Norton Road is the right thing to do to for people and businesses in Hove.”
Central Hove Councillor - Andrew Wealls – added: “We’ve had near universal support for our free parking campaign and have heard numerous stories of unhappiness with the present situation. It makes no sense to have a car park in the centre of Hove sitting empty – let people use it for free at weekends to benefit residents, visitors and local businesses.”
After the petition is formally presented to a meeting of the full council on Thursday, the issue will be referred to the Transport committee for further consideration at its meeting on 27 November.
