Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, is backing a new report on the economic impact of the UK film industry.
Authors of a recently-published independent review on the financial impact of the UK film industry have estimated that its value was Ł4.6 billion in 2011. The report by Oxford Economics (available here) was commissioned by the British Film Institute and Pinewood Studios. Mike worked in the film industry before becoming an MP and set up the Film the House competition in Parliament to draw attention to the value of film to the British economy.
Film the House is an innovative and fun Parliamentary initiative that was conceived to raise the profile of the importance of copyright to film makers, of film itself, and the creative industries in general, among Parliamentarians and the Government. Commenting, Mike said: “I have been championing the economic importance of the creative industries – particularly music and film – since my election to parliament and even mentioned both in my maiden speech. This report highlights the significance that the film industry has to the British economy, so it is vital that we support and promote British film-makers in any way that we can.”
