Mike Weatherley calls for Council Tax Freeze

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has called for a council tax freeze in Brighton & Hove following the Government’s announcement that councils around the country are expected to it will give grants to local authorities who leave council tax unchanged.

For the third year in a row, the Government will offer grants to councils in England to enable them to freeze council tax. This was a Conservative Party manifesto promise following 13 years of Labour government in which council tax more than doubled. The Green Party in Brighton & Hove oppose freezing council tax whilst a Labour minister dismissed the freeze as a gimmick.

Earlier this year, the Greens tried to reject the Government grant to freeze council tax and instead decided to pursue their ideological campaign to increase taxes. However, their plans to increase council tax by 3.5% were defeated by Conservative councillors who stood by the thousands of residents who spoke out against the planned increase.

Commenting, Mike said: I full support a council tax freeze in Brighton & Hove as I know how many people are struggling to make ends meet. The Conservative Party has already delivered on its manifesto pledge to freeze council tax for two years and I am delighted that this commitment is being extended to a third. I know that many hard-pressed families will welcome this move and I hope that when the Greens are drafting next years budget they will think about the families they are hurting rather than their desire to make people pay more tax for ideological reasons.
