Withdean Ward Councillors Ann and Ken Norman are calling on Brighton & Hove City Council to urgently carry out traffic calming measures in their Ward following a road traffic accident involving a teenage boy yesterday (3rd October).
The accident took place in Bates Road and Ann and Ken are asking for traffic calming measures to be carried out as a matter of priority. More specifically, the councillors would like to see pedestrian crossing points, changes to road layouts and a 20mph speed limit introduced in Bates Road, Loder Road, Herbert Road and Gordon Road, all of which are residential streets.
Ann said: “We have been asking for these measures to be introduced for a number of years and have always been told by the Council that these roads are not a priority as there haven’t been any recorded accidents. I understand that there is a limited pot of money for these sorts of things but it is a great shame that it should have to take an accident involving a child for a road even to be considered for safety improvements.”
Ken added: “These roads always have lots of parked cars on both sides and this reduces the visibility for children and other pedestrians who want to cross. We are repeating our call for some sensible measures to make them easier and safer to cross.”
