Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, is backing an Early Day Motion (EDM) that calls on the Government to tighten the use of certain antibiotics on UK farms.
EDM 566 on the Use of Antibiotics in Intensive Farming highlights the problems that come with overusing antibiotics in intensive farm feed as superbugs have become more common. The motion also welcomes the Government’s recent efforts to reduce over-prescribing by doctors, which can lower people’s immune systems.
Commenting, Mike said: “Food from intensive farming has been in the news a lot recently, so this parliamentary motion is more topical than ever. I am concerned that public health is being put at risk in order to keep costs down and profits up, which is potentially very dangerous and totally unacceptable. ”
