Mike Backs Petition Against Keeping Primates as Pets

Following calls by residents for Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, to back a campaign which is fighting for better standards of care for primates, Mike has announced that he is supporting the petition.

The petition (full wording below) calls on the Government to review the standards that are required to keep exotic pets and to apply the duty of care that is required in zoos or wildlife parks. To sign the petition, click here.

Mike is a strong supporter of animal welfare and has pledged to vote against any attempt to repeal the Hunting Act. He has consistently voted in favour of animal rights and has supported a number of campaigns for better treatment of animals in the UK.

Commenting, Mike said: “I have been contacted by many animal-loving residents who are dismayed that people are allowed to keep primates, often in squalid conditions, as pets. I completely support the Government reviewing the legislation with regard to this area as the status quo clearly results in a huge amount of pets that are kept in unacceptable environment.”
