Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has paid tribute to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who died on Monday 8th April 2013.
Margaret Thatcher, 87, was one of Britain’s greatest Conservative politicians. Thatcher was a Member of Parliament from 1959-1992 and Prime Minister from 1979-1990. Margaret Thatcher is survived by her two children, Carol and Mark.
Commenting, Mike said: “I was incredibly saddened to learn that Baroness Thatcher passed away this morning. Thatcher was an inspiring Conservative politician and formidable Prime Minister. We have lost a great leader of the 20th Century and my thoughts are with Baroness Thatcher’s family and friends.”
Mike added: “Thatcher was an absolutely amazing person who profoundly shaped my political thinking while I was at university. Along with the philosophy of Sir Keith Joseph, I was motivated to get involved in politics by Thatcher’s rebalancing of the economy. I had the pleasure of meeting Thatcher five years ago and even then she still commanded the room.
I have no doubt that Thatcher will be remembered as one of the world’s greatest leaders. She helped bring the Cold War to an end, curbed the excesses of unions and, as Britain’s first female Prime Minister, was and remains an icon for democracy around the globe.”
