Conservatives urge GMB Union to talk, not strike

Conservative Group Leader, Cllr. Geoffrey Theobald, has issued a statement following the news that the Council’s City Clean workers are to begin a 7 day strike on June 14th:

“This is a predictable but nevertheless very disappointing result. I would urge the GMB to put off this proposed strike action and instead get back around the table with the Council to resolve their outstanding issues. The current system of allowances and bonuses is a mess and does not comply with equality legislation and so I hope, even at this late stage, that agreement may be possible. Further strike action for such a long period would be extremely bad news for residents, with yet more unacceptable disruption to their bin collections. It would also be bad news for the city’s economy – we are in the height of the summer tourist season and there are lots of important events taking place. Having rubbish piling up on the streets will do untold damage to the city’s reputation as a top visitor destination.”
