Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has called on mobile phone operators to stop charging customers for calling Freephone numbers.
Currently mobile phone operators charge users for calling free-phone numbers, despite the original intention of the number to allow calls to be made for free. With the number of people only having access to a mobile phone increasing, people across the country are paying out to call what should be a free number. Millions of people who do not have access to a landline are currently penalised.
Commenting, Mike said: “More and more people now rely solely on the use of a mobile phone, yet are penalised when calling supposedly free-phone numbers. This situation is particularly concerning as it is also often the poorest in society who do not have access to a landline.”
Mike added, “I also want to encourage business, especially big companies, to offer geographical alternative numbers to the common 0845, 0870 and 0844 numbers, so that once again people who phone from a mobile are not unduly penalised. The Government should take the lead, which is why I have asked all Government departments to review the telephone numbers that they provide to the public.”
