Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has backed an Early Day Motion (EDM) that highlights the work by FareShare, Asda and its suppliers in tackling food poverty.
EDM 200 (FareShare) draws attention to the innovative partnership between FareShare and Asda in its distribution of surplus food to charities and community organisations across the UK. FareShare is a charity that is committed to helping reduce food poverty and food waste. It provides food to disadvantaged groups and offers training to community organisations for food preparation.
In 2012/2013 the food that was redistributed by FareShare contributed towards more than 10 million meals. Every day, an average of 43,700 people benefit from the service that FareShare provides. For more information on FareShare, visit www.fareshare.org.uk.
Commenting, Mike said: “Having seen first-hand the excellent work done locally by FareShare, I am very happy to support this laudable parliamentary motion, which credits both FareShare and Asda for their enormous achievements in tackling food poverty across the UK. I hope that raising awareness of this scheme will help to promote this kind of partnership that has been so effective in furthering such a worthy cause.”
