Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has signed a Parliamentary motion which condemns the killing of thousands of elephants by poachers in Africa.
Early Day Motion 773 (African Elephants and the Ivory Trade) highlights the appalling illegal wildlife trade in Africa, which is targeting elephants and their ivory and calls on the Government to encourage international support for the protection of elephants.
Mike is a strong supporter of animal welfare and has pledged to vote against any attempt to repeal the Hunting Act. Mike has consistently voted in favour of animal rights and has supported a number of campaigns for better treatment of animals in the UK.
Commenting, Mike said: “Not only is the illegal wildlife trade, which slaughters thousands of elephants absolutely repugnant, there is a disturbing link of profits going to terrorists and criminal gangs. I hope that the Government will take a lead in working with the international community to help stamp out this disgusting animal cruelty.”
