Mike Backs Employer Wage Incentive

Mike - Wage Incentive

At a recent event in Parliament, Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, met with Grahame Widdowson, Customer Service Operations Manager for Brighton & Hove Jobcentre Plus, to discuss the wage incentive scheme.

Mike is backing wage incentives of up to 2,275, which are available for employers who recruit an 18-24 year old who has been receiving benefits for at least six months through Jobcentre Plus. In Brighton & Hove, Since April 2012, employers have selected 88 claimants using the Wage Incentive to gain employment, yet there are a further 98 young people who would qualify if employers in the city were willing to take them on.

The Wage Incentive is promoted by the Chamber of Commerce, BrightonandHovejobs.com, Brighton & Hove Economic Partnership and ProActive. However, the Job Centre Plus still struggle to find sufficient vacancies for the Wage Incentive and are actively seeking employers who are interesting on taking on young people.

Commenting, Mike said: The wage incentive is an excellent opportunity for employers to take on young people who have been unemployed for six months or more. I hope that more businesses in Brighton & Hove will take advantage of the Governments scheme in the coming months, which will get more 18-24 year olds into employment and developing their skills.
