Mike and Iain Duncan Smith MPMike Weatherley, Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has welcomed his colleague the Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP, Secretary of State for Work & Pensions, to his constituency in order to discuss local unemployment.

On Friday 21st March, the Work and Pensions Secretary was at the Job Centre Plus in Boundary Road where he thanked staff for their tireless efforts in helping to get local people back into work. Latest figures show that the jobless total down by 26% since the Conservative-led government came to power in 2010.

Iain Duncan Smith spoke to the Job Centres team, led by Grahame Widdowson and Tim Smith, who told the Secretary of State of their success in tackling youth unemployment in the area.

Tim Smith said: The reduction in the 18-24 jobseekers claimant count has been a great success story and is now below the low levels reached prior to the recession.

Speaking to staff, Iain Duncan Smith said: I want to thank you all for everything you do to keep Hove working. The reduction of 26% in unemployment in Hove and Portslade shows that our economic plan is working. Our reforms to welfare make sure that it will always pay to work.

Commenting, Mike said: The government has taken the tough decisions needed to get the economy back on track. This is clear when you consider that unemployment is down in Hove and Portslade by over a quarter since the election, combined with the fantastic success of reducing the overall youth claimant count.
