Brighton's Palace Pier, a cherished city emblem starring in classic films, is now up for sale.
Nationally, Labour pledged economic stability and expansion, yet they've imposed unprecedented tax increases, shattered business morale, and stalled the economy. Confidence levels have dropped to depths unseen since COVID, growth has flatlined, and joblessness has risen a full point since Labour took power.
Conservative councillor Ivan Lyons also blames the Labour Administration in Brighton and Hove Council—and the previous Green leadership—for ignoring tourism and shunning business-friendly measures. He argues that both parties’ disdain for vehicles is misplaced, and that revitalising visitor numbers requires car access and cheaper parking. Councillor Lyons added: “This Labour council is more interested in students and vanity projects than it is in promoting tourists, and as a result the future of our historic pier is uncertain. Labour, locally, have totally taken their eyes off tourism and our winter economy. As part of Labour’s neglect, the pier is for sale.”
Brighton and Hove Conservatives believe that Hove and Portslade MP Peter Kyle, now Business Secretary, shares in the blame: his government is piling on red tape, deterring investment, and helping ruin businesses both nationwide and locally. How long until hospitality and retail sectors across the city face a crisis. We call upon Peter Kyle to act now to avert this looming disaster.
